History and Heritage
The Beech River Cultural Center and Museum chronicles the history of Henderson County, from the lineage of its inhabitants to replicas of its early settlers' log cabins. Many historic sites reflect the county's deep Civil War roots and the challenges that faced a divided population. Battle sites and reenactments are abundant for history buffs. Henderson County is also home to many historic churches, and the storied Natchez Trace State Park contains the gravesite of the famous explorer Meriwether Lewis.
An Outdoor Dream
Henderson County is an outdoorsman’s dream. Beech Lake, one of seven county lakes, offers more than 1,000 acres of water for boating, kayaking, paddle boarding and just enjoying scenic views and calm waters. Beech Lake also gets competitive juices flowing with water sports and fishing competitions. In addition, Henderson County is home to the beginning of the Natchez Trace, a 444-mile trail full of American history. Once used as a trade route by native Americans, settlers and traders, the Natchez Trace State Park and Natchez Trace State Forest provide hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, historical sites and incomparable views of nature.

Henderson County isn’t just for the outdoorsy types. The recently renovated Princess Theatre in downtown Lexington offers performing arts events, including Hollywood’s newest blockbuster releases. Downtown Lexington is also home to boutiques, antique stores, local retail and restaurants. The square downtown is a welcoming venue for a variety of festivals, fairs and special events all year round.
